Tech Crunch was officially named “Idiot of the Year” after believing Trevor Milton was Arrested at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, Arizona. Tech Crunch reported this as “real news” after rogue and heroic Twitter account Jules Paxton, tweeted the following as a JOKE:
“BREAKING DOJ AND FBI ARREST TREVOR MILTON AT SKY HARBOR AIRPORT PHOENIX”
Tech Crunch, was founded in 2005 and later acquired for $25 million in 2010 by AOL. With over 10.2 million followers on Twitter, Tech Crunch’s tweet on Trevor Milton being arrested moved the “blue-chip retirement” stock downwards.
Thousands of other really crappy “breaking finance news” Twitter accounts also posted the tweet.
