Sounds like a line from South Park, but in all actually the workers did not want those jobs.  This is a result of Covid-19.  Shopping at large grocery box stores is turning into a time-consuming chore.  Waiting in lines of 10 shopping carts deep or more is the new normal, whether it is the self-scan or cashier checkout.  Somehow the sign on the door stated if you are feeling sick do not enter; became the excuse needed by the employee to call in sick.  This has resulted in long checkout lines.

According to the internet:  supermarket chains first introduced self-service checkouts in 2003, and Walmart, the retail behemoth will be going fully self-checkout and/or “Scan & Go” by the end of 2021. That means it won’t be long before you go to Walmart and you’ll no longer see cashiers or manned checkout lanes- you’ll likely see self-checkout “hosts,” and possibly one or two lanes with a cashier for those with special needs.

Smart phone will soon play a role in eliminating the cash register all together.  Smart shopping carts and baskets are comprised of existing shopping carts and baskets, a camera to scan products and LED lights on carts and baskets to indicate whether the shopper is correctly buying their items.  Once done shopping the customer simply heads to the door and the greeter just looks as the cart.  View the link, scroll down and watch the video.  https://cart.syea-comfort.com/
Remember this is the new normal.
